Bluefields Medical Center
|
The Autonomous Regions of the Atlantic Coast are the most isolated and neglected areas in Nicaragua. The rate of death because of inadequate and/or timely medical services is higher than anywhere in the country. Although there are several hospitals in the area, none of them are adequately equipped to handle serious medical emergencies. Most of them are underfunded and are badly deteriorated. These hospitals are over stretched in a region of more than 350,000 people. The Southern Autonomous Region, specifically Bluefields, was chosen as the city to build a new and modern non-profit regional medical center managed and staffed by SCA. The new medical center will not be a substitution for the governmental runned hospital. Instead it is an additional option available to the community.
A Positive First Step In 2007, the Southern and Northern Authonomous Governments and Regional Councils and SCA signed a collaborative agreement to expedite the approval of all necessary reports and permits and to secure the necessary land to build the medical center. This legislative and governmental decision is a sign of a collective sentiment. It reflects the urgency to find a viable solution to an ongoing systemic problem.
